New Delhi, Aug 10: The Indian Railways’ flagship Vande Bharat Express continues its rapid expansion, with 144 services now operating across the country’s broad gauge electrified network, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
Designed and developed indigenously, the semi-high-speed Vande Bharat trains are revolutionizing passenger rail travel in India by offering enhanced speed, comfort, and safety on key routes.
Modern Features, Rising Popularity
Equipped with modern features like Kavach collision avoidance system, automatic plug doors, sealed gangways, reclining ergonomic seats, mobile charging sockets, and Divyangjan-friendly lavatories, these trains have become a preferred mode of transport for millions.
In 2024–25, nearly 3 crore passengers used Vande Bharat services, with 93 lakh more traveling between April and June 2025 alone, Vaishnaw revealed.
Facilities also include mini pantries, hot cases, bottle coolers, CCTV surveillance, and executive class revolving seats, providing a premium onboard experience at affordable rates.
PM Modi Inaugurates New Vande Bharat Routes
On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bengaluru–Belagavi Vande Bharat Express, where he also interacted with students and children during the journey.
The event at Bengaluru station was attended by prominent leaders including Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
PM Modi also flagged off two additional Vande Bharat services:
• Amritsar to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra
• Nagpur (Ajni) to Pune

The rapid rollout of Vande Bharat trains reflects the government’s focus on upgrading rail infrastructure, easing congestion on high-demand routes, and providing safe, fast, and efficient travel options to passengers nationwide.
