Gaza, Aug 11: At least five Al Jazeera journalists were killed Sunday in an Israeli airstrike near the main gate of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, according to the Qatar-based broadcaster.
The dead include correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, along with cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa and Mohammed Noufal. Two other people were also killed in the attack, which targeted a tent used by members of the press.

Shortly after the strike, the Israeli military confirmed it had targeted al-Sharif, calling him a “terrorist” and alleging he served as the head of a terrorist cell in Hamas. The military claimed he was involved in planning rocket attacks on Israeli civilians and troops.
Al-Sharif, 28, had been reporting on intensified bombardments in Gaza City moments before his death. A final post published on his X account—apparently scheduled or posted by a colleague—read: “If these words of mine reach you, know that Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice.”
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned the killings, calling them part of a pattern of targeting media workers and warning that journalists are civilians and must never be targeted. The Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate described the attack as a “bloody crime” and an assassination.
The strike comes amid a 22-month war in Gaza that has killed around 200 journalists, according to media watchdogs. Israel and Al Jazeera have long had a strained relationship, with the network banned in Israel and accused by Israeli officials of ties to Hamas—a charge the channel denies.
An Al Jazeera anchor broke down in tears on air while announcing the deaths, describing al-Sharif as one of the network’s most prominent voices reporting daily from northern Gaza.
