Istanbul, Aug 11: A powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey’s northwestern Balikesir province on Sunday evening, resulting in the death of an 81-year-old and injuring several others, authorities confirmed.

The quake occurred at 7:53 p.m. local time in the Sindirgi district, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD). It was felt across nearby provinces, including Istanbul.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that the elderly victim was pulled from debris by rescue teams but later succumbed to injuries. Over 15 buildings collapsed, and many people sustained injuries, though exact figures are still being compiled.

Footage broadcast by NTV showed scenes of destruction, with rescue efforts underway as people searched for survivors beneath rubble.

Minister Yerlikaya announced on social media platform X that emergency response units, including AFAD, were immediately dispatched and field inspections began without delay.

"So far, we have not received reports of widespread emergency situations, but monitoring is ongoing," he said.

Visuals shared by Turkish media revealed extensive damage across Balikesir, including multiple collapsed buildings and emergency teams at work amid the debris.
