Mob kills two in Bangladesh, video sparks outrage

Dhaka, Aug 14: Two men were beaten to death by a mob in Rangpur’s Taraganj upazila, in yet another chilling case of mob violence in Bangladesh. The graphic video of the incident, widely circulated on social media, has triggered global outrage and renewed concerns over the country’s growing lawlessness.

The victims — identified as 40-year-old Ruplal Das of Ghanirampur and 35-year-old Pradip Das of Mithapukur — were reportedly targeted on suspicion of theft. The brutal assault took place on the grounds of Burirhat High School over the weekend.

Eyewitness accounts and local media reports reveal that while a small group of police officers did arrive at the scene, they failed to take control and left when the crowd turned aggressive. By the time reinforcements from the police and army arrived, Ruplal had already succumbed to his injuries, and many of the attackers had fled.

Footage from the incident shows a large crowd encircling the victims, who were lying in a van, visibly injured. Attempts by police to intervene were met with hostility. After officers withdrew, the mob resumed the assault using sticks, rods, and punches. Shocking details include repeated blows delivered to ensure death, with onlookers encouraging the attackers with chants like “Give it more.”

Ruplal was pronounced dead on arrival at the Taraganj Health Complex, while Pradip died later at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Ruplal’s wife, Bharati Rani, has filed a murder case implicating between 500 and 700 people. So far, police have arrested four suspects: Ebadat Hossain, Akhtarul Islam, Rafiqul Islam, and Mizanur Rahman.

The incident is the latest in a disturbing wave of mob justice cases that have surged since the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus came to power last year, raising alarms about the erosion of law and order in the country.
