Hooghly, Aug 15: A 24-year-old nurse was found dead under mysterious circumstances at a nursing home in Singur, Hooghly district, on Thursday, sparking outrage and political protests.
According to police, the woman’s body was discovered hanging from the ceiling in a third-floor room of the facility. She had joined the nursing home only four days earlier and hailed from Nandigram in Purba Medinipur district.

The victim’s family has alleged that she was sexually assaulted and murdered after she uncovered irregularities in the nursing home’s operations. The management, however, has denied the accusations, claiming she died by suicide.
Police have initiated an investigation and said they are awaiting the autopsy report before taking further action. “We are waiting for the autopsy report before taking any action,” a police officer stated.
The incident triggered protests by opposition BJP and CPI(M) workers, who accused the management of foul play. State minister and local TMC MLA Becharam Manna said strict action would follow if the probe confirms any wrongdoing.
