Washington, Aug 17: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet US President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday, amid concerns in Europe over the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war.
The meeting follows Trump’s recent Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which was described as historic but produced no breakthrough. This will be Zelensky’s first US visit since February, when his talks with Trump ended in a public clash.

To prevent another showdown, European leaders are considering sending Finnish President Alexander Stubb or NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to accompany Zelensky. Both leaders maintain a working relationship with Trump and could act as diplomatic mediators.
European capitals remain uneasy after Trump’s warm reception of Putin in Alaska. Reports suggest Trump has already conveyed to Zelensky a Russian proposal under which Moscow would gain control of two Ukrainian regions and freeze the frontlines elsewhere. Zelensky is said to have rejected demands to cede Donetsk.
Trump has indicated that the responsibility now lies with Zelensky to secure a peace deal and has proposed a possible three-way summit with Putin and Zelensky, though Moscow has not confirmed participation.
