Udupi, Feb 5:  Two labourers lost balance while discharging their works at a building under construction at Udupi-Brahmagiri on Saturday February 4.

The deceased painting workers are Shiva (29) from Shimoga and Sukanth Mendon (28) of Kolkata. They were working for a contractor named Subramanya.

Around 7.15 am when they were working first Sukanth Mendon lost balance and fell on Shiva, as a result of which both of them were gravely injured. Though they were rushed to the hospital, they lost their life.

The mishap could have been prevented if the labourers were provided with safety belt or other safety tools. A complaint has been registered against the contractor as it is alleged that he did not heed to the request of the labourers in providing safety measures.

Two innocent lives were lost due to the negligence of the contractor of not providing protective slings!! Contractor should be taken to task and forced to pay adequate compensation to the next of kin of the deceased!! But who will take up for the poor and uneducated laborers, such is their plight, their live's value is less than that of an animal!!
