Mangaluru district court receives hoax RDX bomb threat via email; police launch probe

Mangaluru, Aug 22: Tension gripped Mangaluru on Friday, August 22 after an email claiming the presence of an RDX bomb at the Dakshina Kannada District Court complex in Kodialbail triggered a full-scale security alert. The threat, which turned out to be a hoax, prompted swift action from police and bomb disposal teams.

The suspicious email was sent to the official court email address around 2:30 am on Friday. However, the contents of the email came to the notice of the court staff only by evening, at which point they alerted local law enforcement.

The message claimed that an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) containing RDX had been planted inside the court complex.

Responding immediately, the Mangaluru police and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) rushed to the location. A detailed and thorough search was conducted across the entire court premises and surrounding areas. Despite the extensive efforts, no suspicious object or explosive material was found.

Following the sweep, police confirmed that the email was a false alarm, and the threat was determined to be a hoax intended to cause fear and disruption. Authorities have described the act as deliberate mischief, adding that such attempts to disrupt public institutions would be dealt with seriously.

Initial investigations revealed that the threatening email originated from the address rajagiri_marudhayan@outlook.com, sent by an as-yet unidentified individual.

The Mangaluru North (Bunder) police station has registered a case, and an investigation is underway to trace the origin of the email and identify the sender.

“We are treating the matter with utmost seriousness. Though it was a hoax, such threats pose a serious risk to public safety and judicial functioning,” a senior police officer stated. “Efforts are on to track down the individual responsible and take appropriate legal action.”

The police have urged citizens not to panic, reassuring the public that security has been heightened and that all necessary precautions are in place. The incident has also prompted a review of email monitoring and emergency response protocols at key public institutions in the city.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement agencies are also exploring whether the hoax is linked to any previous incidents or part of a broader pattern of disruption attempts targeting government bodies.
