Lokayukta officials conduct surprise inspection at DK District Sports Hostel, find irregularities

Mangaluru, Aug 23: The deputy superintendent of police, Lokayukta, Mangaluru division, Dr Gana P Kumar, along with police inspectors Bharathi G and Ravi Pawar, and other staff, paid a surprise visit to the Dakshina Kannada District Sports Hostel for boys and girls located at Mannagudda here on August 22. During the inspection, several irregularities were found.

It was observed that the hostel kitchen lacked cleanliness, food grains were not in stock, and the rice supplied contained worms. A stock register was not maintained, and for cooking, a low-quality palmolein oil with high fat content was being used.

At the time of inspection, 33 children were residing in the hostel, but they were not being provided with nutritious food. Despite limited space in the dining hall, boys and girls from two separate hostels were made to dine together in the same hall.

Most of the students staying in the hostel are athletes pursuing education through scholarships. Although the government provides grants, proper food arrangements were not made. The government also allocates funds annually to distribute sports equipment to the students, yet for half the year, parents were forced to buy equipment for their children at their own expense. Though shoes supplied were from branded companies, they were of poor quality and became unusable within weeks.

The hostel has several rooms, but five children were accommodated in a single room. Even though the government provides funds to take students to various sports events, parents were forced to bear the expenses, indicating misuse of the grants.

Students did not have access to telephone facilities to contact their parents. Moreover, when the sports students travel to participate in events, their regular classes are affected. However, no computers were provided to access academic lessons, and the available computers were found damaged without being put to use. Records showed that students were not given counselling sessions or health check-ups.

It was also noted that although the office of the assistant director and deputy director of the department of youth empowerment and sports is located just 100 meters away at Mangala Stadium, these officials had not inspected the hostel. The inspection revealed food shortages, irregularities in food supply, failure to change tenders, and non-maintenance of stock registers.

A comprehensive report on these findings will be submitted to the Lokayukta, stated Kumarachandra, in-charge superintendent of police, Karnataka Lokayukta, Mangaluru division.
