Noida, Aug 24: A man accused of killing his wife in Greater Noida, whose death was captured on video, has been shot in the leg by police after he reportedly tried to escape custody.
Vipin Bhati, the husband of 28-year-old Nikki Bhati, was arrested after Nikki succumbed to her burn injuries at a Delhi hospital on Thursday. Nikki's sister, Kanchan, who is married to Vipin's brother, has alleged that Vipin and his mother set Nikki on fire. She captured chilling footage of the assault and Nikki engulfed in flames.
The police were taking Vipin to his home to recover the bottle of flammable liquid used in the crime. According to Senior Police Officer Sudhir Kumar, Vipin snatched a police officer's pistol and opened fire. In response, officers shot him in the leg. Vipin was later hospitalized. In a statement he maintained his innocence, claiming, "I have not done anything. She died on her own." He also said that "fights between husband and wife happen everywhere."

Nikki's family has been outspoken about their desire for justice. Hours before the incident, her father, Bhikari Singh Payla, told reporters that he wanted the accused to be shot. Following the encounter, he expressed his satisfaction, stating, "I am happy. Such people should be shot or hanged."
The sisters, Nikki and Kanchan, were married to brothers Vipin and Rohit on December 10, 2016. According to Kanchan, the in-laws were perpetually unhappy despite receiving a substantial dowry. She shared that the family would often criticize the gifts and the sisters' profession as makeup artists, even taking their earnings.
Kanchan detailed a history of domestic abuse and neglect. She said that both Vipin and Rohit would often stay out late and were violent toward their wives. "Our nights were spent crying," she said.
The brutal assault was witnessed by Nikki and Vipin's six-year-old son, who described how his mother was hit and then set on fire. While Vipin has been arrested, his mother, father, and brother are still at large.
