Mangaluru, Aug 25: Nitte (Deemed to be University) inaugurated its flagship Nitte Climate Action Programme (NCAP) 2025, uniting academic leaders, government officials, and students in a collaborative effort to combat climate change on Monday.
The event, held at the K S Hegde Medical Academy Auditorium, highlighted the institution's commitment to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The ceremony was graced by chief guest Darshan H V, IAS, deputy commissioner of the DK District. In his address, he emphasised the immediate and local impact of environmental issues. "Climate change is not a distant threat; it is a reality affecting our communities right now," said Darshan. "The Nitte Climate Action Programme is a commendable initiative that will empower our youth to become active participants in building a sustainable future for our district."



The guest of honour, Prof (Dr) G Sriniketan, former IIC president, Nitte University, spoke on the critical role of education in driving change. "Educational institutions have a unique responsibility to lead the charge against climate change," he stated. "By fostering a culture of innovation and research, we can develop sustainable solutions that will have a lasting global impact," he added.
Prof (Dr) M S Moodithaya, vice chancellor of Nitte University, presided over the function, highlighting the university's holistic approach to sustainability. "Nitte (Deemed to be University) is committed to integrating the Sustainable Development Goals into all our activities," he remarked. "The Nitte Climate Action Programme is a testament to our resolve to create a generation of climate-conscious citizens and leaders," he added.
The inaugural function saw the attendance of other key dignitaries, including Dr Harsha Halahalli, registrar, Nitte University, Prof (Dr) Suma Ballal, deputy registrar & chief coordinator of the SDG Cell, Dr Vinayaka B Shet, member secretary of the SDG Cell; Shashi Kumar Shetty, NSS coordinator, Nitte University. The programme aims to initiate a series of awareness drives and projects to promote environmental sustainability across the campus and local communities.
Dr Nesara Kadanakuppe, associate professor, Nitte Institute of Communication conducted a session on NCAP for the students.
The event was organised in collaboration with NSS unit of NitteDU, Dr M R S M English Medium High School, Thokur, MRPL, Mangaluru.
