PM Modi, Finland president discusses Ukraine conflict, push for India-EU free trade pact

New Delhi, Aug 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday spoke with Finland President Alexander Stubb, with discussions centering on the Ukraine conflict, bilateral cooperation, and the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

According to the MEA, President Stubb shared his assessment of recent high-level meetings in Washington between European, U.S. and Ukrainian leaders on efforts to resolve the conflict. Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s consistent support for dialogue and peaceful settlement, stressing the importance of early restoration of peace and stability.

The two leaders also reviewed ongoing bilateral cooperation and reaffirmed commitment to strengthening ties in new and emerging areas such as quantum technologies, 6G, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and sustainability.

President Stubb reiterated Finland’s backing for an early conclusion of a mutually beneficial India-EU Free Trade Agreement and extended support for the AI Impact Summit to be hosted by India in 2026.

Prime Minister Modi invited President Stubb to visit India, with both leaders agreeing to remain in close contact.

Reflecting on their conversation, PM Modi posted on X: “Had a good conversation with President Alexander Stubb. Finland is a valued partner in the EU. Discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in trade, technology and sustainability. Exchanged perspectives on peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.”

President Stubb, in his post, said, “A good conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We discussed the need for a just and lasting solution to Russia’s war in Ukraine. India plays an important role. We also agreed on the need to further deepen India-EU relations.”
