Chennai, Aug 30: Chennai is being hailed as India’s healthcare capital, and more specifically, the diabetes care capital of the country, says R M Anjana, consultant and managing director of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre.

“From the first diabetes clinic in 1948, Chennai became the birthplace of speciality diabetes care in India. Today, the city leads in precision diabetology, research on diabetes complications, genetics, nutrition, and overall diabetes-related studies, putting Chennai on the global map for diabetes research,” Anjana said.

The city also boasts well-established medical colleges that have trained generations of healthcare professionals, contributing to organised and specialised medical services across India.

Apart from its medical prominence, Chennai’s unique culture adds to its charm. “Bharatanatyam is not only integral to our cultural heritage but also an excellent form of physical activity, particularly for women. Chennai also has the second-longest urban beach in the world, offering ample opportunities for outdoor exercise,” Anjana highlighted.

She further praised Chennai’s commitment to tradition, stating, “It is a city that strongly and proudly holds on to its culture, which is something to celebrate alongside its healthcare achievements.”

Chennai’s blend of medical expertise and cultural richness continues to make it a model city for both health and heritage.
