Jammu, Aug 30: Heavy monsoon rains triggered deadly landslides and cloudbursts in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, claiming at least 11 lives across Reasi and Ramban districts.

In Reasi district’s Mahore area, a family of seven was buried when their house collapsed due to a landslide around 3 am, triggered by a cloudburst. Rescue teams recovered the bodies after three to four hours. Five of the deceased were children aged 12, 10, 8, 6, and 4, Waqar Yunus, Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Mahore, confirmed. Distressing visuals from the site show villagers retrieving the family members from mud and debris.

Meanwhile, in Ramban district’s Rajgad area, a cloudburst around 12:30 am caused flash floods, damaging a house and a school. Four people were confirmed dead and one remains missing, according to Senior Superintendent of Police Arun Gupta.

These incidents are the latest in a string of monsoon-related disasters in Jammu and Kashmir, which have claimed at least 138 lives across Kishtwar, Kathua, and Reasi districts from August 14 to 26, according to reports.

Lt Governor Manoj Sinha expressed his grief over the tragedies and assured that rescue and relief operations are underway. “Condolences to the bereaved families. All possible assistance is being provided to the affected,” he said.

The India Meteorological Department has warned of continued heavy rainfall in isolated parts of Jammu and Kashmir from August 30 to September 2, urging residents to remain cautious.
