New Delhi, Sep 5: In the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, the Narendra Modi-led Union Government has announced India’s most ambitious defence modernisation blueprint since Independence. The 15-year roadmap, prepared by the Ministry of Defence, envisions a sweeping transformation of the Army, Navy and Air Force with nuclear-powered warships, hypersonic missiles, AI-driven weaponry and space-based warfare capabilities.

As per the vision document, the Indian Army will induct nearly 1,800 future-ready battle tanks, replacing the ageing T-72 fleet, along with 400 light tanks for high-altitude combat, 50,000 tank-launched anti-tank missiles, and 700 robotic counter-IED systems.

The Indian Navy is set for a major push with plans for an indigenous aircraft carrier, 10 advanced frigates, 7 corvettes and 4 landing dock platforms. Significantly, nuclear propulsion for frontline warships has been cleared, along with electromagnetic aircraft launch systems for carrier-based operations.

The Indian Air Force will strengthen its aerial dominance with 75 high-altitude pseudo-satellites, 150 stealth bomber drones, over 100 remotely piloted aircraft, and a stockpile of precision-guided munitions.

Defence experts have described the roadmap as a path-breaking leap in India’s strategic preparedness, aimed at countering emerging regional threats while asserting India’s role in future warfare.
