Mangaluru, Sep 6: A spate of daring housebreaks in the usually quiet neighbourhoods of Modinagar and Padmashree Layout, near Muchoor in Surathkal, has left residents rattled. In the early hours of the morning, burglars targeted four houses, breaking open doors and making off with valuables worth Rs 50,000, including a silver lamp.
The culprits did not stop there — seven to eight more homes were also targeted, with gates found opened and signs of attempted entry. However, the thieves were forced to flee some properties, apparently startled by the barking of dogs.

CCTV footage from multiple houses in the area has captured the movements of two suspects, believed to be armed and carrying sharp tools—possibly levers or crowbars used to force open doors. According to preliminary assessments, the duo was also seen carrying bags likely containing weapons, and one reportedly had a knife in hand.
“The burglars appear to have scoped out unoccupied houses beforehand and struck when the time was right,” said a local police official. “Fortunately, the barking of dogs deterred them from entering more homes.”
Police believe the criminals specifically selected vacant homes as their targets, avoiding those with clear signs of occupancy. Officers from the Surathkal police station visited the scene shortly after the incidents were reported and have launched a full-scale investigation.
