Kolkata, Sept 6: A horrifying case of mob justice unfolded in Nischintapur village of Nadia district on Saturday, as two people were lynched by angry residents who suspected them of murdering a missing eight-year-old boy.

The child, identified as Swarnabha Biswas, a Class 3 student, had gone missing on Friday afternoon after playing in a nearby field. Despite a frantic overnight search by the family and locals, he could not be located. His body, wrapped in tarpaulin, was discovered the next morning floating in a nearby pond.

The discovery sparked outrage in the village, with locals alleging that the boy had been murdered by a neighbour, identified as Utpal Biswas, 45, and his wife Soma Biswas, 38. Residents claimed the child had cut marks on his head, and blood was visible from his nose and eyes.

Fueled by suspicion and anger, a mob stormed the couple’s home, brutally assaulted them, and set their house on fire. The couple was rushed to Tehatta Hospital in critical condition but were declared brought dead, according to police officials.

Another individual was reportedly injured during the violence and is receiving medical treatment.

Unverified claims by villagers suggest that one of the accused had previously attempted to abduct schoolchildren and had even been caught in a nearby village, Palashi.

Police confirmed that no arrests have been made so far. The bodies of the child and the two adults have been sent for post-mortem examinations.

“We have launched a full investigation. We are waiting for the autopsy results and working to identify those involved in the attack,” a police spokesperson said.

The incident has sent shockwaves across the district, highlighting the dangerous consequences of mob vigilantism and the urgent need for due process in criminal investigations.
