Kolkata, Sep 7: After a long gap of nine years, the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) on Saturday conducted the School Level Selection Test (SLST) for recruitment of assistant teachers. The examination for classes 9 and 10 posts was held across 636 centres, with over 3.19 lakh candidates appearing.
The exercise, however, was marred by political controversy. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari alleged that the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) was indulging in malpractice, claiming that question papers were being sold and that 156 “tainted candidates” were allowed to sit for the test despite Supreme Court directions.
“This exam is not being conducted following proper guidelines. Question papers have been sold by TMC. So, this time as well, the exam cannot be transparent,” Adhikari said.
Authorities assured candidates of transparency, stating that question papers had special security codes to prevent leaks, while any malpractice would be detected within half an hour. Security was tightened at all centres with metal detectors, and items like mobile phones, smart watches, and calculators were banned.
The SSC also set up a control room to assist candidates, while additional bus, train, and metro services were arranged for smooth travel.
Wishing candidates success, Education Minister Bratya Basu posted on social media that the administration was committed to ensuring transparency and smooth conduct of the exam.
Chief Secretary Manoj Pant had earlier held a meeting with district magistrates, SSC officials, and the school education department to review preparedness.
There are 23,212 vacancies for classes 9 and 10, while 12,514 posts are open for classes 11 and 12. Over 2.54 lakh candidates are expected to take the higher secondary teacher recruitment exam on September 14.
