New Delhi, Sep 10: In a major embarrassment for the force, the Delhi Police Vigilance Unit on Tuesday arrested Assistant Sub-Inspector Rakesh Kumar, posted at Hauz Qazi Police Station, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000.

The action came after a resident of Bazar Sita Ram lodged a complaint stating that Kumar had threatened to falsely implicate him in a criminal case unless he paid up. Acting on the complaint, officials registered an FIR under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Vigilance Police Station.

According to police, the complainant had been asked to bring the cash to the station at 12:30 pm. He arrived with 30 notes of Rs 500 each, which were used for a trap operation.

As per the plan, the Vigilance team kept watch outside the Hauz Qazi station. After the bribe was handed over, the complainant signalled the team, and officers rushed to nab Kumar.

However, in a dramatic turn of events, Kumar allegedly flung the notes into the air in an attempt to destroy evidence.

With the area teeming with bystanders, around Rs 5,000 was grabbed by passersby, while the remaining Rs 10,000 was recovered at the spot. Kumar was immediately taken into custody and will be produced before the Rouse Avenue Court.
