New Delhi, Sep 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said Indian and US teams are working to conclude discussions on a trade deal that will unlock the full potential of the bilateral partnership, responding positively to US President Donald Trump’s remarks that there would be no difficulty in negotiations.
This marks the second exchange of goodwill between the two leaders on social media in just four days, even as ties remain under strain following Trump’s move to double tariffs on Indian goods to 50% and his administration’s criticism of India’s Russian energy imports.

Modi described India and the US as “close friends and natural partners”, adding, “I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership. Our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest. I am also looking forward to speaking with President Trump. We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for both our people.”
Earlier, Trump posted on Truth Social that India and the US are “continuing negotiations to address the Trade Barriers between our two Nations”. He expressed confidence in a positive outcome, saying he looked forward to speaking with his “very good friend” Modi.
The Financial Times, however, reported that Trump had asked the European Union on Tuesday to impose tariffs of up to 100% on China and India as part of a joint effort to pressure Russia to end its war in Ukraine. Citing officials, the report said Trump made the request while dialing into a meeting between senior US and EU representatives in Washington.
While Trump’s latest outreach has been conciliatory, senior members of his administration, including White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, have continued to target India over Russian oil imports and tariffs. Navarro alleged India’s purchases are “profiteering” and provide funding for Russia’s war machine, while urging New Delhi to “come around” in trade negotiations instead of “laying down with Russia and China”.
Formal trade negotiations between India and the US had stalled weeks ago, but officials on both sides have maintained contact to revive talks. The outcome is also linked to Trump’s planned visit to India for the Quad Summit later this year, though no dates have been finalised.
The recent friendly tone marks a sharp departure from the criticism India has faced from Trump’s aides. Last Saturday, Modi had reciprocated Trump’s “positive assessment” of ties after the US president told reporters he would “always be friends” with Modi and highlighted the “special relationship” between the two nations.
