Patna, Sep 11: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Rajkumar Rai alias Allah Rai was gunned down by unidentified assailants on Wednesday night in Patna, sending shockwaves across the political spectrum just months ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections.

The incident occurred in the Munnachak area of Chitragupt, where two armed men allegedly opened fire on Rai. Police sources said Rai, who was believed to be preparing to contest from Raghopur constituency, sustained multiple bullet injuries.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared brought dead by doctors. At least six cartridges were recovered from the spot, officials confirmed.

Patna Eastern Superintendent of Police Parichay Kumar said preliminary investigations suggest that a land dispute may have triggered the attack, as Rai was actively engaged in land-related businesses. A forensic team has also collected evidence from the scene.

CCTV footage obtained from the area reportedly shows the attackers executing the crime before fleeing. Police have launched a manhunt to nab the culprits.

The killing of the RJD leader has heightened tensions in the region, particularly as the state heads into elections.
