New Delhi, Sep 11: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday accused online critics of E20 petrol of running a “paid campaign” aimed at politically targeting him. Speaking at the annual convention of the Society of Automobile Manufacturers, Gadkari defended the government’s move to blend 20% ethanol into petrol, calling it a cost-effective, pollution-reducing, and import-substituting initiative.
“The way your industry works, so does politics. The social media campaign was paid; it was to target me politically. There is no fact in it; everything is clear,” he said. Gadkari highlighted that the ethanol blending policy has benefitted farmers, generating approximately Rs 45,000 crore in income from maize production alone.

Addressing environmental concerns, Gadkari pointed out the health impact of pollution, noting that residents of Delhi could lose up to 10 years of life if pollution levels remain unchecked. He stressed that E20 petrol reduces carbon emissions, enhances vehicle acceleration, and improves ride quality.
The minister also countered claims that E20 reduces fuel efficiency and causes vehicle wear and tear. “Vehicle mileage depends on various factors, including driving habits, maintenance, tyre pressure, and air conditioning load. Claims about a big reduction in fuel efficiency are misplaced,” he said.
Gadkari warned that returning to E0 petrol could reverse the gains made in reducing pollution and advancing India’s energy transition.
