Bijnor, Sep 12: A 21-year-old woman, Reena Singh, allegedly died by suicide following a domestic dispute over cooking chicken in Vanshiwala village of Amroha district, Uttar Pradesh. The incident, which occurred on August 20, has taken a serious turn after her family accused the in-laws of dowry harassment, claiming she was murdered.

Police have arrested three accused in the case — Reena’s husband Nigam Singh (24), his brother Mahkar Singh, and cousin Bijendra Singh. Authorities also recovered a dupatta, believed to have been used in the act.

According to Hasanpur circle officer Deep Kumar Pant, during police interrogation, Nigam admitted to bringing home chicken to cook despite his wife’s objection Reena was reportedly a vegetarian. He was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Later that night, Nigam claimed he found Reena hanging in their home. In an attempt to hide the incident, he — along with Mahkar and Bijendra allegedly wrapped her body in cloth and disposed of it in the Ganga River, approximately 3 kilometre's away. The next day, he filed a missing person’s report at the local police station.

Reena, a resident of Kokapur village in Adampur, had married Nigam just ten months ago. Her family grew suspicious after her sudden disappearance and lodged a formal complaint with police, accusing the in-laws of harassment for dowry.

Based on a complaint filed by Reena’s mother, Kaushalya Devi, police have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 80 (dowry death) and Section 238 (disappearance of evidence). The case names five accused — Nigam, his parents, his brother Mahkar, and cousin Bijendra.

Authorities confirmed that efforts are still underway to recover the victim’s body from the river and locate the remaining two accused. The investigation is being closely monitored by senior police officials.
