New Delhi, Sep 12: The BJP launched a sharp attack on Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, for skipping the swearing-in ceremony of C.P. Radhakrishnan, who took oath as the 15th Vice President of India on Friday. The ruling party accused Gandhi of repeatedly neglecting key national occasions, calling it a breach of democratic and constitutional decorum.
BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh said, “Rahul Gandhi’s continued absence from major constitutional events like the Vice President’s swearing-in or even Independence Day reflects a serious disregard for his constitutional duties. Whether intentional or symbolic, this pattern undermines democratic norms. He has become a habitual offender when it comes to evading responsibilities as the Leader of Opposition.”

Mumbai BJP president and MLA Ameet Satam also weighed in, criticising the Congress party broadly: “This reflects the opposition’s lack of respect for constitutional and democratic values. Even during events of national importance, they choose to remain absent. It reveals a deeper issue with their political culture and priorities.”
Bihar minister Nitin Nabin added to the chorus, accusing the Congress of lacking faith in constitutional institutions. “They don’t trust the Election Commission, the Supreme Court, or any key institution in this country. Their absence from such events is just another sign of that distrust.”
In response, the opposition sought to clarify the situation. Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Anand Dubey defended Gandhi, saying his absence should not be misinterpreted. “As Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi carries a heavy national responsibility and follows a tight schedule. If he missed the swearing-in, it does not equate to disrespect. He will soon meet Vice President Radhakrishnan personally to extend his congratulations, as is customary in political life. Missing an event doesn't indicate arrogance.”
The swearing-in ceremony took place at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath. The event saw the presence of top dignitaries including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Presidents and Vice Presidents, and key union ministers like Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh.
C.P. Radhakrishnan secured the Vice President post by defeating opposition nominee B. Sudershan Reddy, receiving 452 first-preference votes. Prior to assuming office, Radhakrishnan resigned from his role as Governor of Maharashtra.
