Jind, Sep 15: Jind-based social activist Sunil Kapoor, accused in a case linked to sexual harassment allegations against former Jind Superintendent of Police (SP) Sumit Kumar, allegedly shot himself dead in Dehradun on Sunday after being surrounded by police.

According to Jind police, a joint team of Haryana, Haridwar and Dehradun police, acting on a tip-off, raided a relative’s house where Kapoor was hiding. He reportedly locked himself in a room and, as officers and family members tried to get the door opened, panicked and shot himself. “The Uttarakhand Police are carrying out proceedings,” confirmed Jind SP Kuldeep Singh.

Kapoor had earlier been booked under the IT Act and other sections after a letter went viral in which several women police personnel accused SP Sumit Kumar of sexual exploitation. While the Haryana government later gave Kumar a clean chit, the Women’s Commission had expressed dissatisfaction and sought further investigation.

Police claimed Kapoor had even fired at a Jind CIA team earlier. During the latest operation, CIA in-charge Manish Kumar said Kapoor’s location was traced to Dehradun before the fatal encounter.
