Renowned researcher, writer Dr K G Vasantha Madhava passes away

Bengaluru, Sep 18: Renowned researcher, writer, and retired lecturer Dr K G Vasantha Madhava passed away on the night of September 17 at his daughter’s residence in Bengaluru. He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.

Prof Dr K G Vasantha Madhava (Gujjadi Vasantha Madhava Kodancha) was born on April 9, 1937. He completed his post-graduation in History at Karnataka University, Dharwad, and later obtained a PhD with his dissertation on Political History of Kanara: 1565-1763.

He served as professor of history at Mulki Vijaya College for 32 years. After retirement, he guided students as a Research Professor at Calicut University in Kerala. Dr Madhava authored around twenty historical works in both Kannada and English, along with thousands of articles.

A book on his scholarly contributions was authored by Dr S Padmanabha Bhatt and published by Kantavara Kannada Sangha under the Naadige Namaskara series.

Dr Madhava was honoured by Udupi’s Govinda Pai Research Centre for his academic excellence. He was also felicitated at the Third World Congress of South Indian History Congress held in Goa. Among the many honours he received were the Yugapurusha Award and Kota Shivaram Karanth Award. He was felicitated by the Mangaluru Taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Mulki Taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Dakshina Kannada District Sahitya Parishat, and also by the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy. In addition, he was conferred the Fellowship of the Royal Asiatic Society, London in 1983, and by the Institute of Historical Studies, Kolkata, in 2017.
