Iran vows to overcome UN sanctions snapback, cites resilience of nuclear programme

Tehran, Sep 21: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday asserted that Tehran would overcome any attempt to reimpose sanctions through the U.N.’s so-called “snapback” mechanism, following the Security Council’s decision not to permanently lift sanctions.

“Through the 'snapback' they block the road, but it is the brains and the thoughts that open or build the road. They cannot stop us,” Pezeshkian said, in remarks broadcast by state television. He added that attacks on nuclear sites like Natanz and Fordow cannot halt Iran, as “humans built and will rebuild Natanz.”

The move by the Security Council followed a push by Britain, France, and Germany to trigger the 30-day snapback process, accusing Iran of failing to comply with the 2015 nuclear deal. Tehran denies intentions to develop nuclear weapons.

The snapback, if implemented, would reinstate U.N. sanctions including an arms embargo, restrictions on uranium enrichment, bans on ballistic missile activities, global asset freezes, and travel restrictions on Iranian individuals and entities.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council warned that cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) could be “effectively suspended” if sanctions are reinstated, despite recent agreements to resume inspections at key nuclear sites targeted by U.S. and Israeli strikes.

“We will never surrender in the face of excessive demands because we have the power to change the situation,” Pezeshkian emphasized, highlighting Tehran’s determination to maintain its nuclear program.
