Copenhagen Airport shuts down after drone sightings disrupt flights

Copenhagen, Sep 23: Copenhagen Airport, Scandinavia’s busiest air hub, closed its airspace Monday night after drones were spotted flying in and around the airport perimeter, halting all departures and arrivals.

Henrik Stormer, a senior officer with Copenhagen Police, said three to four drones were observed, prompting substantial resources to investigate the incident. “We are, of course, taking this very seriously. I don’t know at this point who is behind it, but these are not just hobby drones—they’re something larger,” he told Bloomberg.

The disruption began around 8:30 p.m. local time, when Denmark’s state-owned air navigation service provider, Naviair, suspended the airspace. Authorities said the motive behind the drone activity is unclear, and the operators remain unknown. Investigations continued late into the night.

The incident highlights the growing vulnerability of major airports to drone interference, a challenge that has affected other European hubs such as London and Frankfurt, raising concerns over aviation safety and air traffic disruptions.
