Guwahati, Sep 24: In a major crackdown on narcotics, Assam Police seized drugs worth Rs 90 crore in an interstate bust in Cachar district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday. The operation led to the arrest of two drug peddlers and the seizure of 3 lac YABA tablets from a vehicle that had entered Assam from a neighbouring state.
Sharing the update on X (formerly Twitter), CM Sarma wrote, "In an anti-narcotics op, Cachar Police intercepted a vehicle coming from a neighbouring State and seized 3 lac YABA tablets. Two peddlers have been arrested and the only high they will now experience is in jail."
The seizure is being hailed as one of the largest in recent months, with the international market value pegged at Rs 90 crore.

Speaking to media later, Sarma reiterated that Assam remains firm in its zero-tolerance policy towards drugs. He warned that traffickers are now adopting advanced methods, including the use of drones, to deliver consignments while operating remotely from outside the country.
“The battle against the drug nexus is massive. Drug smugglers are evolving their tactics. Some are using drones, and others are sending micro-consignments through multiple agents to avoid detection,” Sarma said.
He added that many kingpins operate from abroad, using India-based couriers and carriers to distribute narcotics. Explaining the complexities, he said that traffickers often send several people with small amounts, making it hard to detect. “If 10 people travel with half a gram each, it becomes nearly impossible to catch them all,” he said.
Despite these challenges, the Chief Minister praised the ongoing efforts by Assam Police and intelligence units, saying the state is committed to staying one step ahead in this long-term fight against narcotics.
He concluded by stating that continuous operations like the recent one in Cachar are essential to dismantling drug networks and protecting society from the growing menace.
