New Delhi, Sep 26: Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Friday inaugurated the Dr Manmohan Singh Research Centre and Library at the party headquarters, commemorating the former Prime Minister’s 93rd birth anniversary. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Dr. Singh’s widow Gursharan Kaur, and other family members were present.

The library, housing over 1,200 books, chronicles the journey of the Congress and India, with dedicated sections on Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Indira Gandhi, multiple volumes of The Encyclopedia of the Congress, and party poll manifestoes.

“Dr. Singh’s life and work are a beacon of simplicity, honesty, and dedication. This centre is not just a tribute to his legacy but a reminder for future generations of what true service to the nation looks like,” Rahul Gandhi said in a Facebook post.

The library also features a rare collection of photographs, including images of Dr. Singh in his 1991 office presenting the historic budget, a photograph of the Constituent Assembly members, and historic portraits of Congress founding leaders A.O. Hume, Dadabhai Naoroji, and William Wedderburn.

While the Congress previously maintained an informal library at its 24, Akbar Road office, this is the first formal facility at the new Indira Bhawan headquarters, reflecting a significant step in preserving the party’s and the nation’s political heritage.
