US tightens rules for non-citizens seeking truck driving licenses

Washington, Sep 26: The US Transportation Department on Friday announced an emergency regulation to severely restrict commercial driver licenses for non-U.S. citizens following a fatal crash in Florida and a recent government audit.

Under the new rules, non-citizens will only be eligible for a truck-driving license if they hold an employment-based visa and pass a mandatory federal immigration status check.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy also revealed an enforcement action against California, instructing the state to pause issuing certain commercial driver licenses to non-U.S. citizens until compliance with the federal rules is ensured.
