Karnataka government approves appointment of guest lecturers

Bengaluru, Oct 2: Responding to widespread student protests, the Karnataka government has approved the appointment of guest lecturers for the academic year 2025-2026.

A recent letter from the under secretary of the Higher Education Department to the commissioner of the Department of Collegiate and Technical Education confirmed that guest lecturers will be appointed until the completion of the semester.

The letter stated that higher education minister M C Sudhakar has given his approval for the appointments. It also mentioned that guest lecturers who served in the 2024-25 academic year will continue their duties.

Furthermore, if the teaching workload persists, candidates with UGC qualifications will be appointed, in line with an interim court order issued on September 9.

The move has been welcomed by students, particularly those led by AIDSO (All India Democratic Students’ Organisation), who have been protesting across Karnataka demanding the hiring of guest lecturers.
