Mangaluru, Oct 5: “Music sweetens life. Over the last 40 years, I have had the privilege of teaching music to thousands of children. Being a music teacher has been a true blessing for me. Teaching music has given me immense satisfaction, and today, as I stand here, I feel truly fulfilled,” said renowned music teacher Carmelita Alvares, as she expressed her joy after being felicitated on the occasion of International Music Day at Kalangaan, organised jointly by Mandd Sobhann and SumeL on Sunday, October 5.
The programme began with a soulful musical prayer service at the Kalangaan chapel led by Clara D’Cunha, setting the tone for the evening dedicated to music.





SumeL coordinator Raina Sequeira welcomed the gathering and shared insights into the establishment of SumeL by Eric Ozario, its efforts in training young artistes and nurturing musical talent over the years.
Mandd Sobhann president Louis Pinto felicitated Carmelita Alvares for her significant contribution to the field of music. Premi Lobo read out the citation, highlighting Carmelita’s dedicated service. Office-bearers Ronny Crasta, Sunil Monteiro, and Clara Pinto were present on the occasion. The felicitation ceremony was ably compered by Ashlin Vismaya Lobo, while Karen Mathan conducted the proceedings of the event.
As part of the celebration, the 286th monthly SumeL Antakshari was held, adding a lively and entertaining touch to the evening.
The Antakshari featured several unique rounds including traditional Konkani songs, Mandd Sobhann compositions, Goan numbers, audience participation, and a special multilingual round featuring songs in Kannada, Tulu, English, Hindi, Punjabi, and Sri Lankan languages, much to the delight of the audience.
The Antakshari was conducted by Simon Monteiro, Lavina Danti, Renold Lobo, Jacinta Bela Prima Ferrao, Prithuma Monteiro, and Raina, each managing different rounds with enthusiasm. The live music accompaniment was led by Sanjay Rodrigues, supported by Elron Rodrigues, Ashwil Colaco, Renold Lobo, and Baba Keith Rasquinha, adding vibrancy to the performances.
The event brought together music lovers and artistes, creating an evening filled with melody, joy, and heartfelt celebration of music’s power to inspire and unite.
