Moodbidri, Oct 12: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds, thunder, and lightning lashed several parts of Moodbidri taluk on Saturday evening.

In Alangar, a tree fell across the Moodbidri–Karkala highway, disrupting vehicular movement for some time. Near the entrance of the Samaj Mandir, a tree branch broke and fell on an electric pole, damaging a theatre flex board.

In Moodbidri town, a large tree branch snapped and fell on the tin roof of the autorickshaw shelter opposite the Samaj Mandir, causing significant damage. The branch also fell on a nearby shop owned by Siya, trapping the shopkeeper under it, who managed to escape with great difficulty. Autorickshaw drivers had earlier requested the forest department to clear the tree, citing safety concerns.

Strong winds were also reported in Alangar and Uliya areas. The roof of St Thomas High School in Alangar was blown away and landed nearly 100 metres away. Some electric wires snapped and fell to the ground, and a tree collapsed on a house. Another tree fell near Jain PU College.

Heavy rain with thunder and lightning was also reported from Thodaru, Beluvayi, and surrounding areas. Power supply was disrupted in several parts of the taluk.
