Hijab row at Kochi school sparks safety fears, political outcry, and temporary shutdown

Kochi, Oct 13: A hijab-related controversy at St. Rita’s School in Palluruthy, Kochi, has triggered a heated debate over religious expression, institutional discipline, and student safety. The issue began when a student was barred from attending classes for wearing a hijab, reportedly in violation of the school’s uniform policy. In response, the school received threats from certain groups demanding that the headscarf be allowed, leading the management to shut the school temporarily for two days to ensure the safety of over 600 students.

The student's father has alleged that his daughter faced mental harassment for choosing to wear the hijab and has submitted complaints to both the Kerala chief minister and the education Minister. School authorities, however, counter that the student had complied with the uniform code for four months before abruptly resuming the hijab last Tuesday, allegedly under external influence. The administration stressed that their decision was rooted in maintaining uniformity and discipline, fearing that exceptions could erode institutional order and pressure other students.

The situation escalated further when former Kerala BJP president K. Surendran weighed in, blaming the state’s ruling Left and opposition Congress for emboldening “extremists.” He accused the government of inaction and called for the immediate reopening of the school, arguing that hundreds of children were being denied their right to education due to fear and intimidation.

As the controversy continues to unfold, it has sparked a wider discussion across Kerala about religious freedoms, school regulations, and the fine balance between personal expression and institutional rules. With political voices joining the fray and parents expressing concern for their children’s safety, a resolution remains elusive as authorities and community leaders work to de-escalate tensions and find common ground.
