Old Goa, Oct 13: The serene halls of the St Joseph Vaz Spiritual Renewal Centre in Old Goa came alive with reverence, joy, and celebration as the much-anticipated book - 'A Church on a Journey: The Archdiocese of Goa and the Governors' by Fr Joaquim Loiola Pereira was officially launched.

The event was graced by his eminence Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão, who unveiled the book in the presence of a distinguished gathering.

Among the dignitaries present were his Simião Purificação Fernandes, emeritus Bishop Alex Dias, and emeritus Bishop Alwyn Barreto. The gathering included priests, religious, family members, collaborators, and friends — all united in admiration for Fr Loiola’s contributions to the church and society.

Fr Myron Barretto warmly welcomed the guests with heartfelt greetings and the symbolic offering of a potted plant, setting the tone for an event rooted in gratitude and growth.

Cardinal Ferrão, known for his gentle wit and engaging presence, captivated the audience with his humour and heartfelt praise for the author, who has served as the secretary of the Archbishop of Goa and Daman for nearly three decades.

The book was introduced by Prof Isabel de Santa Rita Vas, faculty of Goa University and a close cousin of Fr Loiola. She eloquently highlighted the significance of the work and the author’s deep connection to the church’s journey through time.

Fr Loiola, in his address, shared the inspiration behind the book. Working very close to the Throne Hall in the Archbishop's House, adorned with the portraits of 35 bishops and archbishops who have served the diocese, he imagined them whispering to him: “Take us out — into the streets, the markets…don't let us be forgotten within these four walls." This vision sparked in him the idea to bring their legacy to life through his writing. A gifted musician and former Director of Social Communications for the archdiocese, Fr Loiola’s multifaceted talents were evident throughout the event.

The celebration also coincided with his 75th birthday, adding a personal and joyous dimension to the occasion. A musical group presented three Marian hymns as it was the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, filling the hall with devotion and melody.

Fr Onasis delivered the vote of thanks, expressing deep appreciation to all who contributed to the success of the event. Fr Ramiro Luis served as the master of ceremonies, guiding the programme with grace and warmth.

Each attendee received a free copy of the book, which costs Rs 2000. The event concluded with a high tea, where conversations flowed and memories were shared, marking a fitting end to a memorable day.
