Mau, Oct 15: A 27-year-old woman was allegedly drugged, raped, and blackmailed for over 18 months by a man who recorded an obscene video of her, police said on Wednesday.

The accused, identified as Ashish Kumar (23), a resident of Ropanpur village in Mau district, befriended the woman around two years ago through Instagram.

According to the complaint, about one and a half years ago, Kumar invited the woman to meet him, where he allegedly drugged her, sexually assaulted her, and secretly filmed the act. Since then, he had been blackmailing her using the video and repeatedly raping her while threatening to post it online, said Bheempura SHO Hitesh Kumar.

Based on the victim’s complaint, a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act.

Superintendent of Police Omveer Singh confirmed that Ashish Kumar was arrested from Ibrahimpatty town on Wednesday and remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation is in progress.
