Bantwal: Absconding accused in over 20 cases arrested

Bantwal, Oct 16: A habitual offender who had been absconding and failing to appear before the court in connection with more than 20 criminal cases was arrested by the police on Tuesday, October 15, at Madva in Bantwal taluk.

The arrested person has been identified as Farooq alias Umar Farooq (32), a resident of Sajipa Mooda village in Bantwal taluk. Police produced him before the court, which subsequently remanded him to judicial custody.

Farooq was wanted in several theft and housebreaking cases registered across multiple police stations, including Uppinangady, Kadaba, Vittal, Bantwal Town, Bantwal Rural, Konaje, Barke, and Bajpe.

Among the pending cases are those registered under the following:

Uppinangady police station: Crime Nos. 38/2020 (Sections 457, 380 IPC), 39/2020 (Sections 380, 201, 34 IPC), 48/2012 (Sections 379, 201, 34 IPC), and 119/2020 (Sections 457, 380 IPC).

Kadaba police station: Crime Nos. 43/2020, 44/2020, 45/2020, and 46/2020 (Sections 457, 380 IPC).

Police sources said Farooq had been evading arrest and court appearances for a long time, following which a warrant had been issued against him. After receiving credible information about his whereabouts, a police team successfully apprehended him at Madva.

He has now been remanded to judicial custody, and further investigation is underway.
