Dalit man assaulted over illegal mining in Katni

Katni, Oct 16: A Dalit man was beaten and humiliated by four people, including a village sarpanch’s son, in Matwara village under Bahoriband police limits, Madhya Pradesh, after opposing illegal mining near his farm.

Police identified the accused as Ramanuj Pandey, Ram Bihari Pandey, Pawan Pandey, and Satish Pandey, all residents of the village. A case has been registered under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, while the four accused remain absconding, said ASP Santosh Deharia.

Victim Rajkumar Chaudhary alleged that Pawan Pandey urinated on him, hurled casteist slurs, and threatened him against approaching authorities. The attack followed Chaudhary’s objection to gravel filling and illegal mining activities near his farmland.

The incident mirrors a 2023 case in Sidhi district, where a tribal youth was similarly humiliated, drawing widespread attention during elections.
