Surat, Oct 19: Two people, including prominent businessman Sameer Shah, were arrested in Surat after liquor cans were recovered from a vehicle near KS Avtaar Hotel, where a lavish birthday party was held in the dry state of Gujarat.
Sources said the celebration on Thursday saw Shah’s 19-year-old son consuming alcohol with friends inside a vehicle parked near the hotel. When police arrived on a tip-off and attempted to record the drinking, the teenager allegedly misbehaved, shoving and manhandling officers. A viral video shows the confrontation in detail.

Shah reportedly arrived at the scene, attempting to pacify the situation, and allegedly threatened the police with claims of “connections at the top.” Two women also intervened, urging officers to release the teenager, saying “he is a child.”
Police seized nine cans of alcohol worth Rs 1,350, seven mobile phones, cash, and the vehicle, which had an “L” sticker indicating a learner’s licence.
Zone 4 Deputy Commissioner of Police Nidhi Thakur confirmed that two cases have been registered: one for alcohol possession and another for assault on officers. The supplier of the liquor has been arrested, and Sameer Shah was also taken into custody after the delivery person claimed he acted on the businessman’s instructions.
Shah’s son failed a breath analyser test, and his blood and urine samples have been sent for medical examination. He may face further legal action in connection with the assault on police officers.
