GRAP-2 curbs enforced in Delhi-NCR as air quality dips ahead of Diwali

New Delhi, Oct 19: With Delhi’s air quality dipping into the ‘poor’ category ahead of Diwali, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Sunday invoked Stage-II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-2) for the national capital and adjoining NCR areas.

Officials said the decision came after the Air Quality Index (AQI) crossed the 300-mark on Sunday evening, indicating a steady deterioration. “The AQI of Delhi has shown an increasing trend since morning and was recorded as 296 at 4 pm and 302 at 7 pm. Forecasts by IMD and IITM indicate further worsening in the coming days,” the CAQM noted.

Under GRAP-2, restrictions have been placed on the use of coal and firewood in eateries and tandoors, as well as the operation of diesel generator sets in Delhi-NCR. Authorities have also ordered daily sweeping and water sprinkling on major roads to control dust and ease congestion.

These measures come in addition to GRAP-1 curbs, which include a ban on construction activities without dust control measures, mandatory water sprinkling at project sites, intensive inspection of industrial units, and stricter checks on CNG compliance for public transport.

Citizens have been urged to limit private vehicle use, opt for public transport, and avoid outdoor physical activities when pollution levels peak.

Experts warned that air quality is likely to further deteriorate after Diwali, as the bursting of firecrackers, coupled with unfavourable weather conditions, could trap pollutants near the surface, leading to smog formation.

Authorities have appealed to residents to celebrate the festival responsibly and avoid bursting firecrackers, stressing that “collective action is key to ensuring breathable air for all.”
