Vaishali, Oct 20: RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav’s elder son and Janshakti Janta Dal chief Tej Pratap Yadav has been booked for allegedly violating the model code of conduct (MCC) during the filing of his nomination papers from the Mahua assembly seat in Bihar’s Vaishali district, police said.

According to a statement by the district police on Sunday, the Circle Officer of Mahua lodged a complaint after a video circulated on social media showed Yadav using an SUV bearing a police logo and beacon light while submitting his nomination documents on October 16.

“It was thoroughly examined and found that the police logo and beacon light used on the vehicle were privately owned. Therefore, a case has been registered for violation of the election code of conduct,” the police statement added.

Tej Pratap Yadav had floated the Janshakti Janta Dal after being expelled from the RJD on May 25 for six years by his father, reportedly over a personal relationship with a woman. Following his expulsion, Yadav had claimed his social media post announcing the relationship was hacked. Lalu Prasad had disowned him, citing his “irresponsible behaviour.”

A few days after the expulsion, Tej Pratap alleged a “conspiracy” to create a rift between him and his younger brother Tejashwi Yadav, referring to the crisis in posts on X using the term ‘Jaichand’ as a metaphor for traitors.

The case reflects heightened scrutiny on candidates ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, with the police investigating alleged misuse of vehicles and official insignia during election campaigns.
