Mumbai, Oct 21: In a remarkable medical achievement, S L Raheja Hospital, Mahim – A Fortis Associate, has successfully performed its first-ever Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) at its Centre of Excellence (COE) for Haemato-Oncology, bringing new hope to patients battling life-threatening blood disorders.

The life-saving procedure was conducted on 61-year-old Bijayentimala Devi from Manipur, who was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a complex form of blood cancer. She underwent an autologous stem cell transplant, which led to a significant recovery in her health, weight, and overall well-being — allowing her to return home just in time to celebrate Diwali with her family.

The transplant was led by a team of experts including Dr Abhay Bhave (Senior Consultant), Dr Shreya Agrawal (Consultant), and Dr Shrinath Kshirsagar (Consultant), supported by a multidisciplinary medical team and state-of-the-art facilities equipped with advanced infection-control systems and specialized post-transplant care.

Speaking on the achievement, Dr Kunal Punamiya, CEO, S.L. Raheja Hospital, said, “This transplant marks a defining moment in our hospital’s pursuit of medical excellence. It reflects our commitment to providing advanced, life-saving therapies with compassion and precision.”

Expressing gratitude, the patient’s husband, Mr Khamba, said, “We are deeply grateful for the care and support we received at S.L. Raheja Hospital. The doctors and nurses were exceptionally caring, both physically and emotionally. The improvements we’ve seen are remarkable — it feels like a new beginning.”

The hospital described the successful transplant as a testament to its focus on innovation, excellence, and holistic healing, strengthening its position as one of Mumbai’s leading centers for advanced medical care in oncology, neurology, and transplant medicine.
