Mysuru, Oct 28: A cyber investment scam promisin enormous stock market returns has left a J P Nagar resident here defrauded of Rs 1.58 crore from her bank accounts, police said.
The victim, who joined a WhatsApp group, was persuaded by cyber criminals that investing via the apps Sysco Trading and Tencore would yield substantial profits.
Following the instructions, she downloaded both apps on her mobile device. Initially, she invested Rs 60,000, but seeing the purported returns, she gradually invested a total of Rs 1,58,93,000 from two separate bank accounts. When she tried to withdraw the profits, the fraudsters insisted that she invest an additional Rs 16 lac.
Suspecting foul play, she contacted her banks and discovered the funds had been illicitly transferred. The victim lodged a complaint at the Mysuru City Cyber Police Station on Saturday, and the case has been registered.
In a separate case, an elderly resident of Manchegowda Koppla reported that Rs 6.94 lac disappeared from her bank account, allegedly transferred in stages to multiple accounts by unknown individuals. The case has been filed with the Cyber Police.
Meanwhile, a customer accused bank personnel of stealing gold jewellery from a locker at SBI in the KSOU premises. Jamuna, a resident of Vijayanagar 3rd Phase, reported that 79 grams of gold jewellery she had deposited on October 23 were missing upon checking. The complaint was lodged at Jayalakshmipuram Police Station.
Adding to the growing list of incidents, Vijayanagar police conducted a raid on a spa near the Vijayanagar water tank over allegations of human trafficking and prostitution. Two women were taken into custody, while three women were rescued. The incident has been registered at the Vijayanagar Police Station.
A resident of Kushalnagar, Thimmayya, reported that his revolver and eight live bullets went missing from his car, which had been left at a garage near the highway on October 23 for repairs. The complaint has been filed at N R Police Station.
Home burglaries have also risen. In Dattagalli, burglars broke into Adarsh’s home, stealing cash and gold jewellery worth Rs 1 lac while the family was away for Deepavali celebrations. The complaint was lodged at Kuvempunagar police station.
In Naganahalli, burglars looted Manjunath’s home, making off with gold jewellery valued at Rs 4.96 lac while the family attended a memorial ceremony. The case was filed at Metagalli Police Station.
These incidents underscore a worrying rise in cyber fraud, bank account scams, and home burglaries in Mysuru, prompting increased police vigilance and calls for public caution.
