Ahmedabad, Oct 31: In a joint operation against illegal immigration, the Ahmedabad City Police on Thursday detained 17 Bangladeshi nationals, all women including a seven-year-old girl, for residing in India without valid documents. The detainees have been sent to the Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC) in Sardarnagar for questioning by multiple agencies.

The operation was conducted by the Sola Police Station following inputs about foreign nationals living in rented accommodations across the area. According to ACP H M Kansagra of B Division Police, “A total of 17 illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, who had entered Gujarat between 10 days and four years ago, have been detained by Sola police. We have also booked certain landlords for violating police notifications by failing to inform authorities about their tenants.”

The women are aged between 21 and 49 years, with only one minor girl among them. Inspector K N Bhukan of Sola Police said all the detained individuals had arrived in India alone. “In some cases, their families remain in Bangladesh, while in others, their husbands have deserted them,” he stated.

Authorities are probing whether any local agents or traffickers were involved in facilitating their entry from the eastern border into Gujarat. Preliminary findings suggest that most of the traffickers involved are based in Bangladesh.

Following interrogation at the JIC, the women are expected to be deported back to Bangladesh, pending completion of legal formalities.

Police have reiterated their commitment to tracking illegal immigration networks and ensuring landlords comply with tenant verification norms to maintain internal security.
