Crimes against women in Karnataka up by 40% in two years: NCRB

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Nov 3: Crimes against women in Karnataka have risen sharply by nearly 40% between 2021 and 2023, according to the latest figures released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). In 2023 alone, the state reported 20,336 such cases. Key categories included assault with intent to outrage modesty, dowry-related cases, cruelty by husband or relatives, and abduction.

Police officials and activists said the increase reflects greater awareness and willingness among women to come forward rather than a surge in actual crimes. “We are supporting women and building their confidence, which is why more victims are now filing complaints. We also ensure swift action,” a senior police officer stated.

Despite the rise in reporting, a large number of cases remain pending before courts. Compared to previous years, nearly 72,000 cases are awaiting trial across various courts, with another 16,000 added in 2023. Data also revealed that among cases disposed of in 2023, nearly 92% ended in acquittals.

Activists working closely with survivors stressed the urgent need to strengthen the system and provide stronger legal backing to women in such situations.

“This has to begin with the investigating officer. In many cases, officers fail to collect necessary evidence because they don’t take such cases seriously. In other instances, government prosecutors do not pursue them with commitment, leading to acquittals. There is a need to sensitise everyone at all levels,” said K S Vimala of the Janawadi Mahila Sanghatane.
