Bagalkote, Nov 4: H Y Meti (Hullappa Yamanappa Meti), former minister and sitting MLA from Bagalkote, passed away at a private hospital in Bengaluru on Monday. He was 79.

Meti had been suffering from health complications for the past few days and was undergoing treatment for respiratory issues and other age-related ailments.

A native of Thimmapur in Bagalkote district, Meti began his political journey there and first entered the Legislative Assembly in 1989 after being elected from the Gulegudda constituency.

He was re-elected in 1994 and served as the minister for forests. In 1996, he resigned from the ministerial post after being elected to the Lok Sabha from Bagalkote.

Following the constituency reorganisation, the Gulegudda Assembly segment was dissolved. Meti joined the Congress Party in 2008 and contested from Bagalkote, though he was defeated in that election.

He returned to victory in 2013, after which he served as the minister for excise. However, he lost the 2018 Assembly election, only to make a comeback in 2023 by winning again from Bagalkote.

He also served as the chairman of the Bagalkote Urban Development Authority.

Meti is survived by two sons and two daughters.
