Mirzapur, Nov 5: In a tragic incident, six women lost their lives after being run over by a train while crossing railway tracks at Chunar Railway Station in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district on Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred around 9.30 am when the Chopan–Prayagraj passenger train arrived at platform number 4 of Chunar station. According to police, the victims got off on the side opposite the main platform and attempted to cross the tracks. At the same time, the speeding Netaji Express (Train No. 12311) passed through the main line, hitting them before they could react.

“The identities of all six victims are being established,” said Additional Director General (Railways) Prakash D., confirming that all were residents of Mirzapur district.

The mishap triggered panic among passengers, prompting railway and local police teams to rush to the spot for rescue operations. Senior officials also reached the site to supervise relief efforts and ensure that the bodies were sent for post-mortem.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and directed officials to carry out immediate relief operations. He also instructed that the injured, if any, receive proper medical care and that the SDRF and NDRF teams intensify rescue efforts on a war footing.

The North East Central Railway issued a statement confirming the details of the incident, saying, “Some passengers, in haste, got down on the track side instead of the platform side, even though a foot overbridge is available. As a result, six passengers came under the passing Netaji Express and died on the spot.”

The railway administration extended condolences to the bereaved families and urged passengers to always use designated platforms and foot overbridges for their safety.
