Udupi, Nov 5: In a move aimed at improving freight transportation efficiency, Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) has announced an enhancement in the permissible carrying capacity of its Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) wagons from 50 tons to 57 tons.
Introduced in January 1999, the Ro-Ro service is a pioneering initiative by Konkan Railway that allows loaded trucks to be transported directly on railway wagons. The system has proven to be a cost-effective, eco-friendly, and time-saving logistics solution, significantly reducing fuel consumption, driver fatigue, road congestion, and carbon emissions—particularly along the challenging Western Ghats terrain.

As per the latest update, each Ro-Ro rake will now comprise:
• 15 BRN wagons capable of carrying trucks loaded up to 57 tons, and
• 35 BOXN wagons capable of carrying trucks up to 50 tons.
The first Ro-Ro service utilising the newly enhanced 57-ton capacity wagons is scheduled to commence from Wednesday, November 5.
This enhancement will enable the transport of heavier commercial vehicles, providing greater load flexibility, improved operational efficiency, and enhanced economic viability for truck operators and industries.
The move is expected to particularly benefit sectors dealing with iron and steel, marble, tiles, construction materials, and other heavy consignments across the Konkan Railway network.
Truckers carrying loads beyond 50 tons can contact the Kolad booking office at 9004476090 or the Surathkal office at 9686656159 for booking details and operational assistance.
Reaffirming its commitment to innovation and trade facilitation, Konkan Railway stated that it continues to strengthen connectivity and freight movement along the West Coast corridor, ensuring sustainable and efficient logistics solutions for the future.
