Kolkata, Nov 5: In a shocking case of brutality, a tea shop owner in West Bengal’s East Burdwan district was allegedly beaten to death by a customer who claimed that the biscuit he was served “did not taste good”, police said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in the Khalerpool area of Raina on Tuesday. The victim, Farid Ali Sheikh (50), a resident of Machkhanda village, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital on Wednesday morning.

Police have arrested Hossain Mollah, a mason and regular customer at the shop, based on a complaint filed by the victim’s family.

According to locals, Mollah often drank tea at Sheikh’s stall without paying. On Tuesday, after arguing over the taste of a biscuit, he allegedly left the stall but returned later armed with a bamboo stick and assaulted Sheikh on the head, leaving him critically injured.

Farid’s son, Sheikh Syed Ahmed, said that the argument had initially been settled by other customers but Mollah later came back and attacked his father in rage.

The body has been sent for post-mortem, and police said a probe is underway.
